Frequently asked questions

We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common ones.

Coronavirus (Covid-19): is House of Self still open?

Yes. House of Self is continuing to operate online counselling services. You can complete our online enquiry for more information and to get started. In light of Government health and safety advice, our in-person appointments are suspended until further notice.

What is online therapy?

Online therapy is an accessible alternative to meeting with your therapist face-to-face via a secure video chat platform. Video therapy at House of Self is easy-to-use, HIPAA-compliant and requires no downloads.

Are online video sessions secure?

All video sessions are HIPAA secure, just like in-person therapy sessions. We use a HIPAA secure video platform so your privacy and information are protected. Your therapist will always use a secure wifi network and sessions are not recorded to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

Is counselling confidential?

At House of Self, we understand that confidentiality is vitally important. We, therefore, do not disclose anything you discuss with us to a third party unless your safety, the safety of another person or the safety of a child is at risk. In rare cases, our therapists are legally and ethically bound to break confidentiality. For more information please consider our confidentiality and privacy policies.

How long do sessions last?

Individual counselling and therapy sessions last for 50 minutes. If you arrive late for your appointment the session time will not be extended.

How do I know my therapist is right for me?

Finding a therapist can be a challenge. We help match you with one of our experienced clinicians and save you the hassle. We then give you the opportunity to meet via secure video call for a complimentary 15 minutes to see if they are the right fit for you. If they feel like the right fit, you can go ahead with booking your first session.

How do I pay for my session?

We take both cash and card at House of Self. We also accept the Kingston Pound at our Surbiton location. You can pay your therapist by cash or card at the end of your session (face-to-face) or if you would prefer, our admin team can raise an invoice or send a secure payment link for you to make payment securely via email. Online therapy sessions must be paid for in advance using one of our secure online payment methods. To ensure the availability of your therapist, it is advised you book the dates you require in advance and pay securely prior to sessions commencing. Discounts are available for block booking.

Where are the therapist profiles?

We offer a bespoke and tailored service as we know finding a therapist can be a challenge, especially when there are thousands of online profiles to choose from. We want to help reduce the overwhelm. We carefully consider the information you provide in your initial intake form and then follow up with a courtesy call to clarify what is important to you. We help match you with one of our experienced clinicians and save you the hassle. We can send you therapist profiles who we feel best suit your needs and set up a complimentary 15-minute video conversation between you. There is no obligation to book sessions and we encourage you to book with who feels right for you, even if that isn’t with us.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Due to the high demand for counselling services we have a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you arrive or call more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, without any prior contact or notice, this is considered as a non-refundable cancellation. No show appointments are also chargeable. House of Self understands that life can take over and emergencies can happen and if you do need to cancel an appointment at short notice we will take this into account when rescheduling your next appointment. You can read more about our cancellation policy here.

How much is a therapy session?

We operate a sliding scale for individual therapy sessions. Sessions range from £90.00 – £55.00 per 50-minute session depending on what you are able to invest in therapy. These sessions are provided by a highly qualified or accredited therapist at House of Self. Our low-cost sessions are £35.00 and facilitated by our carefully selected trainee psychotherapists and counsellors or qualified therapists who are working towards accreditation. Our low-cost therapy service is for individuals who are unemployed, in receipt of state benefits or registered as disabled.

How many sessions do I need?

We offer both short-term and long-term therapy. Our general recommendation for therapy to be effective is a minimum of 6 sessions. Your therapist would contract with you at the first session for a total of six sessions, please be aware this is not a legal contract as such but forms the basis of the agreement. The counselling contract outlines key responsibilities of the House of Self therapist and the client and helps to clarify expectations. There is no upper limit on the number of sessions you can take and reviews with your counsellor will take place to ensure that the counselling is helpful and appropriate for you.

Can I book a one-off session?

Yes. We believe in the power of therapy and want to reduce as many barriers to accessing it as we can. One-off sessions can be really helpful during stressful times, when time commitments are an issue or if you want to test-drive the experience of therapy.

Where is House of Self?

House of Self operates from three locations. Our primary location and head office are based in Surbiton, Surrey. Our therapists also operate from CCIWBS in Kentish Town and Brighter Spaces in Angel, London. *Please be aware that at present our face-to-face services remain closed until further notice.
