Panic Disorder

We all have times in our lives when a sense of dread or panic sets in — they are remnants of primal survival mechanisms after all.

While occasional exposure to these types of emotions is perfectly natural (although not pleasant) some people feel them constantly and live lives dominated by them.

Panic disorders and frequent panic attacks are experienced by more people than you would first think, making the treatment for them well-established and routinely available. The most important thing is to know you have a panic disorder and to find a professional you feel comfortable asking for help.

Does the sense of panic ever go away?

If you feel you need help with panic disorders and ask a friend you may well be told that you simply need to calm down. The problem here is that, while this advice will be well intentioned, it isn’t the most useful or constructive thing to say. When you suffer extreme feelings of panic on a regular basis it will quickly become your mind’s default reaction to a whole host of stressful situations. These panic attacks will then push up your baseline stress levels, making the next instance increasingly likely as the trigger needed to push you into a state of panic will become smaller and smaller. Without the right help this cycle is unlikely to stop of its own accord.

How do you cope with a panic disorder?

We all have different methods of coping with the things our mind does, but finding the right approach is what will really set you free to live your life. Some people find that simply avoiding the stressful situations which cause them to panic in the first place is a good path to take. While this may work for some, for others who are triggered by everyday occurrences such as driving on a busy road or socialising in a group environment, avoidance only reduces quality of life.

Counselling for panic attacks allows you to get the weight off your chest and open up to someone you trust. The idea is to allow yourself to accept the way you feel, go back to the root causes, and start to understand why you’re reacting the way you are.
